Dermatology Prescription Compounding
Dermatology prescriptions can involve questions about active ingredient, concentration, vehicle, dosage form and application site. When a standard FDA-approved product does not meet a particular patient's needs, a prescriber may consider whether a compounded preparation is appropriate.
Formulation questions
- What active ingredient or combination is prescribed?
- What dosage form or vehicle is specified?
- Is there an appropriate FDA-approved product that meets the need?
- Is an ingredient intolerance or other patient-specific factor driving the formulation request?
- What storage and labeling instructions apply to the prepared prescription?
Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not verify their safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing. A compounded preparation should not be presented as proven to treat every condition associated with a dermatology list. This page makes no cancer-treatment claim.
