Exactly what is Avodart?

Avodart is prescribed to men who experience the urinary symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), such as urinary incontinence, reduced urine flow, waking up to pee in the middle of the night, and hesitating before urinating. Urinary retention due to a sluggish urinary system from a swollen prostate is reduced because of its effects on prostate size.

By stimulating hair growth and blocking future hair loss, Avodart is also effective in treating male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).

Dutasteride, the active ingredient in Avodart, prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the androgen principally responsible for the formation and expansion of the prostate gland. This enzyme, 5-alpha-reductase, comes in two types, type I and type II.

Once daily, with or without meals, you should take Avodart with a full glass of water. Please refrain from opening it or chewing it since doing so might irritate your throat or mouth. Symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) may improve after taking Avodart, but it may take up to six months for the prostate to shrink significantly. The prostate might resume its growth during this time if you discontinue Avodart treatment.

Take Avodart for as long as your physician instructs. This might be anywhere from three to six months.

Negative effects of Avodart

Temporary impotence (while continuing the therapy) and reduced libido are the most often reported adverse effects of Avodart. Less common negative effects include itchy rashes, sensitive breasts, and increased breast size (gynecomastia).
